For this scene, we went around Norbury taking random shots of people on the roads. We all took turns to take interesting shots of people. After this, we printed the pictures out and in order to create more of a scary effect, I burnt the pictures along with Ruskana. We then placed the pictures in a room, whilst Mehreen shot the scene, I posed a shadow that was to be used to create a mysterious figure.

Shooting Schedule

This is our final shooting schedule, that we followed to do our trailer, to ensure that all the filming took place on time.

News Report Background

This is the background for our newsreport. We used chroma key to do this scene, as we firstly designed the background for our news scene as we did not want to use an exisiting news background. After the prodcution of that, Mehreen was placed infront of the interactive whiteboard, whilst Ruksana fiddled with the lighting and shot various scenes to ensure what angle would suit best. However this was not working therefore we used a green background and then merged that in with a scene of our media studies teacher, acting as a news reporter, reading from a script.:

Plot Summary

Plot Summary
The film begins with a new flash of a missing girl, Marie Williams. The incident becomes the talk of the college and everyone is curious as to what has happened. Jamie, who was a close friend of Marie, sits distressed and shaken. Cassey, who is another friend of the group, comforts Jamie and offers her a sleepover around hers for the night to cheer her up and get her mind of the situation.
Jamie arrives at Cassey’s house and they later decide to take a trip to the local park to get high. They arrive at the park and Adam, Cassey’s boyfriend, turns up unexpectedly. They find a quiet spot near an abandoned garage/ house in the middle of the park and begin to wonder about what it is and what’s inside. Adam offers the girls a new type of drug he’s just bought and convinces Jamie to get high and enjoy the night, forgetting about her worries. Jamie is a decent girl who’s never tried drugs in her life, however due to peer pressure and the stress and misery she is going through, she goes ahead and takes the unknown drug.
Whilst the three of them ‘enjoy’ the night and indulge in typical teenage behaviour, Jamie suddenly passes out. The audience see a black out but after a couple of seconds we are back to the same scene, with Cassey and Adam trying to get Jamie back up. They call Jamie light weight and laugh it off. The group then end up playing truth or dare. On Adam’s go they see one of the doors to the house left wide open, so they dare him to go inside. Being the typical arrogant male character he is, he walks in bravely and screams from inside. The girls run in after worried and are treated to a ‘BOO’. Although they are shaking from the scare, they laugh it off without realising the door behind them has been closed. They go back to open the door but find that it’s locked and blame Adam for playing another trick. The lights start flickering and they start to panic, but soon end up laughing the situation off due to being high on drugs. As the lights start flickering the three of them become aware of their surroundings and try to find an alternative way to escape.
They start looking around the large storage room and spot that there is another door leading to a different room. Adam goes to investigate what the room could be in desperate search of finding an escape route. He opens the door and a strong smell hits him. Adam uses his phone to create light and is shocked at the sight of numerous dead bodies that are scattered around the room. The girls call out his name; however they get no response and decide to go see where Adam has gone. They are soon, shocked by the horrific sight of the dead bodies that are seen in the room. Terrified, they all start retrieving and realise that this was not a joke and is a serious matter and are now petrified, as there is no way OUT! The three hear loud banging noises and in deep desperation start to run around the room, in order to find a way out. During this commotion, Jamie ends up banging her head, and thumps to the ground. Cassey and Adam realise that Jamie is nowhere to be seen and see her being dragged into the darkness by an unknown thing. They run towards her in order to help her, and manage to pull her back to safety. Jamie feels a sharp pain in her leg and gets Cassey to take a look at it. They see that Jamie has been scratched severely from knee downwards and Cassey touches Jamie’s knee but realises that blood was trickling down her hands. The room goes pitch black and in desperate need of light, Adam takes out the light from his pocket and lights it handing it over to Jamie. The flame from the lighter blows out so Jamie tries to relight it, however after many attempts a flame finally appears with the view of an anonymous stranger staring directly at her. In fear and panic, Cassey steps back, her feet lands on something sharp, turns vigorously and faces the wall and finds herself at eye level with the words ‘ YOUR NEXT’ written in blood. Cassey screams in horror and leans against the wall. Suddenly, Cassey starts to bang her head continuously against the wall. Her head is being hit fiercely, several times and Adam thinks that Cassey is doing this due to being frustrated, and wanting to find a way out. However, it is actually the unknown thing that is banging Cassey’s head against the wall. Her forehead is soon, covered in blood and Adam takes her into his arms to find that Cassey is now dead. Adam is shocked and is left confused, he runs to the door and starts to bang on the door and grips onto the door handle to try to open it. A knife stabs through the door and pierces through his left eye, killing him immediately. Jamie’s eyes begin to close slowly as she watches her friends die. The shock and fear inside her causes her to pass out, whilst we hear a pair of footsteps walking towards her the scene goes dark.
The next scene starts off with Jamie suddenly waking up in shock, breathing heavily. We realise it is the following morning, and she is lying in Cassey’s bed. Cassey is also waken by her loud breathing and reassures Jamie lazily and tells her to go back to sleep. Jamie lies in bed puzzled looking up at the ceiling trying to make sense of what has just happened. Jamie remains quiet until they go down for breakfast and then decides to ask Cassey on what had happened last night. Cassey explains to Jamie that she had passed out last night and had to be carried home by Adam. They were too scared to take Jamie to the hospital as they would be questioned on use of illegal drugs. Being the light weight she is, they didn’t take her passing out very seriously.
As the days pass, Jamie tries to forget about the incident, however feels a strange feeling haunting her, she feels the presence of the killer from her dreams. Cassey and Adam, pressurize Jamie into going with them to the local park to hang out. However, Jamie refuses to go and prohibits Cassey and Adam to not go too. They do not listen to her and they still decide to go. Jamie senses a bad vibe, and does not want to go, therefore goes back to her own house. She goes to sleep and wakes up the next morning to find that her friend Cassey and her boyfriend have gone missing.
After police investigation, a few days later Jamie finds out that the events that she had dreamt of took place in reality. Jamie keeps seeing the same face continuously everywhere she goes, and starts questioning her surroundings. In news report of the incident the face of the killer is revealed, and Jamie realises that the killer is actually the same person she keeps seeing, the face she had directly seen back in the house. The film ends with Jamie sitting at home watching the T.V screen terrified. She suddenly remembers a vital piece of information which could help to solve the mysterious case, and picks up the phone to call the police station. She finds the phone is not able to connect and instead decides to walk to the station. As she’s about to open her front door, she finds it is locked. Her eye catches a figure standing in the mirror and turns to find the killer is present in the room. THE END.

Theory/Model

Desensitisation:-
This theory suggests that the audience's attitudes to violence can be affected by having been exposed to too much violence on screen.
Exposure too too much fictional violence is argued to amount the audience being 'desentisitised' to real life violence.

Strengths:-
It draws attention to the sheer volume of violence onscreen and raises questions about the degree of exposure audiences should have to violent and aggressive images.

Weaknesses:-
It is extremely difficult to prove how attitudes may have been affected by the single stimulus of medi. There may be many other variables involved.

BBFC Guidelines

U:- No discriminatory language or behaviour unless clearly approved of.

No reference to illegal drugs or drug misuse, unless they are infrequent or there is a clear educational purpose, Scary sequences should be mild. Very mild bad language and nudity, sex and violence.

18:- Suitable only for adults, No one younger than 18 may see an '18' film, Age of 18 adults should be free to chose their own entertainment.

Moral Panic

What is moral panic?
Horror films are often the centre of moral panic
Cohen (1972) argues that a moral panic is when the media amplifies an event to refer to its consequences to much wider social issues.
Moral panic is essentially a 'crusade' against behaviour or is perceieved negative developments in society.

Papers that run moral panic;-
News Of The World
The Daily Mail
Daily Express

How and Why do they work?
It works by raising the alarm and awareness in people by suggesting the event or incident is responsible of a decline in standards or values. That society is becoming more dangerous and permissive.
Suggests morality today is as strong as in ' Golden Age'
Used by politicians and Campaigners

Moral panic has created changes in the law including the 1984 Video Recording Act that gave the BBFC power to classify videos and an amendment to the Crimal Justice and Public Order Bill, insisted the BBFC took issues of 'harm' on board when classifying films.

Representations Of Women

These are the representations of women in horror films;-

In a lower position to men:- men are dominant and submissive
Sacrificed for good
Blonde- victim is too stupid to survive
Brunette- Survive? more practical
Fragile
Needs mans strength

Mulvey's Theory

What is "the gaze" exactly? --
describes the act of looking; began as the study of the objectification of women in visual texts.
How does it impact women in particular?
What are some of the issues involved in discussing "the gaze"?
the objectification of women-- seen as objects
the commonalaity of female nudity -- display implies subordination
internalization of the gaze, changes women's perceptions of themselves and makes them think of themselves as objects
shift to objectification as a source of pleasure (for both the looker and the looked-at)
men as the dominant group have been the looker (the subjects; women the objects)
ties back to another aspect of teh feminist critique of Freud-- the degree to which Freudian theory iis based on visual dynamics

Propp's Theory

Propp analysed 100 folk and fairytales to identify how characters are used to move the narative foward.

His theory includes the following:

1) a hero

2) a villain

3) the donor

4) the dispatcher

5) the false hero

6) the helper

7) the princess

8) her father

These are the main points that he bases his theory on. This theory is true to an extent, however I do not think that it is usually seen applied to horror films. These are mostly related to fairytales and not applicable to the horror genre.

Final Girl Theory

The final girl theory refers to the last girl that is left alive of the film, that confronts the killer. This theory is applied in many films such as Scream, Halloween, A Nightmare in Elm Street and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This is the theory of Carol J. Clover, who believes this theory to be true in most horror films.
The final girl is a virginal and pure character, who does not have a boyfriend, does not do drugs, or does not drink. She is a brunette, is clever and therefore posesses characterstics to survive. She also is manly and androgynous and has a unisex name. Examples of names used in films for the final girls are ' Laurie and Sidney.' The final girl is also not scared to defend herself and is extremely brave.

Scream Opening

The opening scene of Scream is a parody of the horror films that have been made over time. It includes all aspects that are commonly used in horror films and uses them to create its own special opening. The film follows the rules:

1- you will not survive if you have sex

2- you will not survive if you drink or do drugs

3- you will not survive if you say 'I'll be right back'

4- Everyones a suspect

5- You will not survive if you ask 'who's there'

6- You will not survive if you go out to inverstigate a strange noise.

The Famous Shower Scene From "Psycho"

Famous Shower Scene From Pyscho

This is the famous shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock's Pyscho. This scene left many too scared to go into showers alone and turned into being one of the most memorable scenes in horror history. It is considered the most 'stunning and horrifying' scenes of all times and is the film that lets Pyscho in being included in the top-phobia including films list. The entire film is shot in black and white, despite the option of colour being available. The blood that is shown during the scene, is actually chocolate syrup, but due to the use of black and white, creates the blood effect.

Horror Films

Over the past few weeks, I have been watching horror films in order to expand my knowledge on horror films. Before my media coursework, I wasnt really into horror films, therefore have not watched many, and the couple that I had watched I did not really think about why the films how they are. However now the films that I watch make me interpret the films differently, and have made me more aware of why the films are made in such a way. I consider the camera angles, editing and the theories and try to understand why they have been used. In media lessons the films that I have watched are:

Nosferatu (1922)
The Faculty (1998)
Shaun Of The Dead (2004)
Bramstoker's Dracula (1992)
Pyscho (1960)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Halloween (1978)
Carrie (1976)
Scream (1996)
